Here are 10 steps you should take immediately if you injure yourself in the workplace:

Initial steps

  1. Promptly report the accident to your employer or its representative. Write down the person's name and the time and place where you talked.
  2. Note the location of the accident, the time it occurred and how it occurred.
  3. Write down the names of any witnesses.
  4. If possible, take photos of the accident area or the object that caused the accident. If you were injured by a defective piece of machinery or by the negligence of a non-employee, you may have a separate lawsuit against the manufacturer, contractor or entity that negligently caused your injury.
  5. Obtain a workers' compensation claim form from your employer.

Medical steps

  1. Seek immediate medical attention from an employer-approved physician. If you want your own doctor to treat you, promptly advise the workers' compensation agent assigned to your claim.
  2. Attend all medical visits and therapy appointments. If you are given work restrictions, obtain copies and personally give one to your employer and human resources department.
  3. Document all time missed from work, medical and therapy visits, and the mileage to these visits. You can get mileage reimbursement in many states.
  4. Keep your employer updated on your medical condition and restrictions.
  5. If your employer or supervisor gives you a hard time, document what was said, when and where, and if any witnesses were present. Bring it to the attention of your attorney.


The purpose of all this is to properly document your injury. An insurer or employer may claim the following:

  1. You were not injured.
  2. You were not injured on the job.
